கடவுள் வாழ்த்து - Ode to God

எடுத்த செயல் இனிதே முடிய இறைவனின் அருள் துணையை நாடுவதே கடவுள் வாழ்த்தின் நோக்கமாகும். குறுந்தொகையின் இந்தக் கடவுள் வாழ்த்துப் பாடல் பிற்காலத்தில், அஃதாவது நூல் தொகுக்கப்பட்ட காலத்தில் எழுதப்பெற்றதாகும். இனி பாடலைக் காண்போம்:

தாமரை புரையும் காமர் சேவடிப்
பவளத் தன்ன மேனித் திகழொளிக்
குன்றி ஏய்க்கும் உடுக்கை குன்றின்
நெஞ்சுபக எறிந்த செஞ்சுடர் நெடுவேல்
சேவலங் கொடியோன் காப்ப
ஏம வைகல் எய்தின்றால் உலகே.
                        - பாரதம் பாடிய பெருந்தேவனார்

 தாமரை மலரைப் போன்ற (புரையும்) அழகிய (காமர்) சிவந்த காலடிகள் (சேவடி), பவழத்தைப் போன்ற (அன்ன) திகழ்கின்ற ஒளியை உடைய உடல் (மேனி), குன்றிமணியை போன்ற (ஏய்க்கும்) சிவந்த ஆடை (உடுக்கை), கிரவுஞ்சம்* என்னும் மலையின் (குன்றின்) நடுப்பகுதி (நெஞ்சு) பிளவு படுமாறு (பக) எறியப்பட்ட சிவந்த ஒளியை உடைய நீண்ட வேல் (செஞ்சுடர் நெடுவேல்), அழகிய (அம்-அழகு) சேவல் கொடி - ஆகிய இவற்றை உடைய முருகப்பெருமான் நிலையாய் காப்பதினால் இந்த உலகம் இன்பம் (ஏமம்) மிக்க நாள்களை (வைகல்) பெற்று மகிழ்கிறது!

இன்பத்தை (அக இன்பம்) சொல்லும் ஒரு நூலின் கடவுள் வாழ்த்துப் பாடல் அந்த இன்பமே இறைவன் அருளால்தான் கிடைக்கிறது என்று உரைப்பது எத்துனை பொருத்தம்!

இந்தப் பாடலில் முருகனுக்குரிய அனைத்தும் செந்நிறமாய் குறிக்கப்பட்டிருப்பதை காண்க, சிவந்த தாள்கள், சிவந்த மேனி, சிவந்த ஆடை, சிவந்த வேல், சேவல் கொடி - முருகனின் நிறமே செம்மைதான், அதனால்தான் அவன் சேயோன் எனவும் அழைக்கப்படுகிறான் (சே - செம்மை, சிவப்பு). இந்தக் கருத்தை நினைவில் கொள்க, அடுத்தப் பாட்டில் இது அழகாய் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது!

*கிரவுஞ்சம் - ”குறிஞ்சி” (மலையும் மலை சார்ந்த இடமும்)  என்பதன் வடமொழி மருவு, சூரபத்மனுடனான போருக்கு முன் அவனுடய தம்பியின் கிரவுஞ்ச மலையை முருகன் தன் வேலால் அழித்தான்.

To seek God Almighty's blessed help in order to succeed in an assumed task is the aim of having an Ode to God in the beginning. This Ode to God of Kurunthokai must have been written later during the time of compilation of the book. Let us see (my translation of ) the song:

Lotus like beautiful red foot
Glowing coral like skin
Red-bean like attire, hill's
Chest cleft shining long lance
Pretty cock flagged - He guards
Joyous days avails this world!
- Perunthevanar, who sung Bhaaratham

 Lord Murugan - who has beautiful red feet like lotus flowers, skin that glows like red coral, clothes that are like red-bean, a long lance that had been waged such as to cleave and destroy the hill Kravuncham* and a pretty flag that bears cock in it - perpetually protects this world and hence it avails itself of joyful days!

A suitable Ode to God, that says that this world enjoys happy days because of God's blessing, for a book that talks about inner joys (of love - Agam.)

Note that in this song everything associated with Lord Murugan were remarked as being red in color, red feet, red skin, red dresses, red lance, red flag - Lord Murugan's color is Red, that's why he is also known as Cheayoan - meaning Red Colored One. It will be helpful to remember this point because it is used beautifully in the next song!


*Kravuncham - Must be the Samskrit derivative of "Kurinji" - which stands for Hilly region in Tamizh. Lord Muruga is said to have destroyed this hill with his lance before his war with the demon Soorabathman.
